In the spring of 1952 Peter Abrahams visited Kenya and South Africa to write a series of articles for The Observer. It meant that after fourteen years' absence in France and England he returned to Goli (as the Africans call Johannesburg) where he was born and brought up a member of a Coloured family.
In this book he tells what the journey meant to him, and what he found in his home country. It is a personal story and clothes with flesh and blood the bare bones of official statistics and political reports. The problems of Africans, Coloureds and Indians, and of Whites too, are presented in terms of ordinary men and women.
